2025 GHC Summit at Harvard/MIT
Win-win Collaborations for global health and development
Cancer is a growing global health crises and remains a leading cause of death in the United States, affecting 1 out of 3 Americans in their lifetime.. Historically, many USA presidents have taken significant bipartisan actions to combat cancer. Among notable examples, in 1971, Nixon signed the National Cancer Act, which is often referred to as the "War on Cancer." President Ronald Reagan's personal battle with colon cancer underscored the need for public awareness and regular screenings. In 1998, President Bill Clinton signed the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act, which provided funding for early detection and treatment of breast and cervical cancer for low-income women. President George W Bush launched the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Genome Atlas project in 2005, crucial in understanding the genetic basis of cancer and developing targeted therapies. In 2016, President Barack Obama signed the 21st Century Cures Act, which included funding for the Cancer Moonshot initiative led by then-Vice President Joe Biden.. When he became President Joe Biden, he reignited the Cancer Moonshot in 2022, with ambitious, achievable goals: to reduce the death rate from cancer by at least 50% over the next 25 years, and improve the experience of people and families living with and surviving cancer. In July 2024, President Donald Trump declared, “We will unleash the power of American innovation, and as we do, we will soon be on the verge of finding the cures to cancer.." These actions reflect a united/common commitment, which is at the core of the GHC summits focus on collaboration. The 2025 GHC summit at Harvard/MIT will continue to focus on win-win collaborations while celebrating 10 years of GHC summits catalyzing high impact collaborations for global health and development..
